The fire within: our search for a peaceful resolution to inflammation

Humans have been aware of inflammation for thousands of years. The well-known clinical signs of inflammation have been known for 2000 years. Talk will cover how inflammation was discovered and what the clinical signs of inflammation are. We will discover the invisible signs of inflammation that we now know about thanks to technological advances. We will discuss the challenges that remain regarding excessive inflammation common to many diseases, and how we might go about treating 'bad' inflammation in the future.

The evolution of cancer treatment

More people are surviving cancer than ever before thanks to advances in treatment, but some types of cancer still have devastatingly low cure rates. What determines whether our drugs work or not? What new treatments are currently under development? Why do some people reject conventional medicine in favour of alternative therapies? Is there any scientific evidence behind such therapies?Talk will discuss some of the success stories of modern day cancer treatment and look at new approaches such as personalised medicine.
