Both psychiatrists and psychologists are trained to help people with mental health problems but they often use different approaches. Helen will be talking about the idea of ‘Mental Toughness’ - our ability to cope with stress and pressure. She will discuss how mental toughness affects other parts of our lives such as our mental health. Hamish will be talking about antidepressants - often criticised in the media. Can a simple pill treat a complex condition like depression? Do they really deserve all this bad publicity?  Please note this venue has a CASH ONLY bar!

Mental toughness, success, happiness, and life

Mental toughness describes how well we cope with stress and pressure. Can we be trained to be tougher? How does being mentally tough affect other aspects of our lives such as mental health?

Antidepressants: biological or psychological treatments for depression?

Antidepressants are frequently criticised in the media. A view is that depression is caused by stress and that it is a psychological phenomenon, and so how could it possibly be treated by a purely physical, biological, treatment. This talk will challenge this assumption. It will discuss how antidepressants promote healthy brain function and restore innate mechanisms of resilience.
