Do you know how many bacteria live in your body? Or why we get old? Join us as we debug local research into the bacteria of our guts and the processes behind human ageing. We will also have hands on activities and Pint of Science Prizes galore!   Please note that this venue is for over 18s and is not wheelchair accessible.

Demystifying ageing

The proportion of people aged over 60 years is growing faster than any other age group. There is a need for much deeper understanding of the biology of ageing, if society is to appreciate how to secure the best possible lifelong health and prepare for a world in which a much greater fraction of the population will be old. Joao will discuss the following questions: Why do we age? What makes our cells age? Is it important to study ageing? Will we ever be able to circumvent the ageing process?

Our gut bacteria – where do we get them, and what do they do?

The billions of bacteria that live inside the human gut are important for human health. But where do they come from? And what exactly do they do? How do they survive? We now think there are about as many bacterial cells as human cells in the average adult, so come and find out what the bacterial half of you is up to.
