About Mike Addison

Dr Mike Addison read Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh, and completed his post-doctoral research at the University of Southern California.

Joining Proctor and Gamble (P&G) in 1980, Mike spent his first 17 years developing and improving products for P&G’s fabric and home care divisions, and then transferred to Corporate R&D where he was responsible for the management of a million dollar seed fund to help drive European innovation productivity. In his last 12 years with the company Mike helped pioneer the adoption of an Open Innovation strategy across the company – leading efforts in the UK and with special responsibility for scouting opportunities for P&G’s corporate incubator – Future Works.

Since retiring from P&G in 2012 Mike has been helping North East SMEs apply some of what he learnt with P&G while also lecturing on Entrepreneurship and Open Innovation at a number of universities within the UK.

The GX project, led by NewcastleGateshead Initiative, provides a range of opportunities to North-East SMEs and scaleups before, during and after the Great Exhibition of the North. The project is delivered by NewcastleGateshead Initiative in partnership with the Innovation SuperNetwork.

With a focus on innovation the project was originally designed to enable local businesses to benefit from the unique platform provided by the Exhibition in 2018, and it continues to capitalise on collaborations between the Smart Specialisation, Education and Cultural sectors through a programme of intensive business support running until December 2020.

This project is part-funded by the England European Regional Development Fund as part of the European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020.
