There are many mysteries left in the universe, like where do all the ball point pens go when they die? Some question we may never be able to answer but work being done at Newcastle University sheds light on some unsolved problems of the universe, from what powers the large scale magnetic field that pervade the galaxies to stars that behave like a single atom. All while having the chance to try a few beers, possibly some previously unknown ones. Cinema Room @The Town Wall. Doors open at 7pm, Event 7.30-9.30pm. Please note that this venue is for over 18s and is not wheelchair accessible.

Why are galaxies giant magnets?

Radio astronomers have detected and mapped magnetic fields in many galaxies, including our own Milky Way. The origin of these magnetic fields is still unknown, as is their effect on the formation and subsequent evolution of galaxies. Come and hear how big telescopes and powerful computers are starting to unveil the mysteries of cosmic magnetism.

Neutron Stars: soup, pasta and jelly

Neutron stars are the densest, fastest spinning, and most magnetic objects in the observable Universe. To understand how they work we need to push the laws of physics to their limits. I’ll describe what we know about these bizarre stars and what they can teach us about the Universe.
