The study of movement is a real strength in Newcastle. Tonight’s first speaker, Rosie, will be talking about the link between walking and thinking. The way you walk can tell us a lot about your health. It might even be able to predict ageing disorders like Parkinson’s Disease. Andrew will be telling us how science-fiction is fast becoming science-fact. Current advances in technology are helping us to build implants that can bypass the injury and restore movement. Andrew will explain where these technologies are at now and where they may go in the future.

Reading minds and restoring movement

We usually take for granted the ability to move our limbs, but injuries to the nervous system can lead to devastating paralysis. With increased understanding of how the brain controls movement, it is now becoming possible to build electronic implants that bypass injuries and restore movement. This talk will describe the history of neural interfaces and look at where this technology will lead us in the future.

Mind your step! The impact of cognition on walking.

We think that walking is an automatic task, however there is increased understanding that cognition controls some aspects of our walking. In people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) this is even more so with diminished automatic processes being replaced with other resources. This talk describes the relationship between walking and cognition, how the two concepts relate and the use of a walking assessment to predict future cognitive decline in PD.
